Tee It Up Grand Strand host Shan Coughlin welcomes Head Golf Professional Ben Acre from Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links in Little River South Carolina to the show. Ben and Shan talk about old times as Shan was an assistant professional at Glen Dornoch when it first opened back in the late 90’s. One of her best memories is opening the shop early, waiting for the golfers to arrive, and sitting on the back porch in one of the rocking chairs overlooking the shared green of the 9th and 19th holes, watching the sun rise over the Intercoastal waterway.
Glen Dornoch boasts some of the most picturesque holes on the Grand Strand especially the par 4 number 16, their signature hole. You tee off of an elevated tee box hoping to land your ball on a narrow plateau which gives you a second shot into a bunker protected green below that looks like it is floating in the marsh with the Intercoastal waterway as the back drop. Most days, you are hitting into the wind as you watch boaters ease by on their way south before winter and back north in the spring.
Opened in 1996, this Clyde Johnston design is not exceptionally long but does require thought off the tee. It is truly fun for all skill level players and those with patience will come away winners. The clubhouse is unique with huge plate glass windows along the back allowing for those waterway views from the golf shop and the 19th hole. The back porch reaches the length of the clubhouse so as many as possible can take in that double green view backed by the water.
As you add Glen Dornoch to your must play list, the staff is most hospitable. As part of the Glen Group and the Myrtle Beach Best, there are many golf vacation and golf break specials available as well as their $10,000 giveaway. The drawing for this no-strings-attached promotion will be this December so take advantage of getting in. Someone is going to win and shouldn’t it be you? Each time you play, put your name in and when they draw, it could be you. There are several other great prizes including a trip to Mexico, a new set of clubs with bag, a membership and a golf vacation.
