On this edition of Tee It UP Grand Strand, host Shan Coughlin joins Adam Snead, head golf professional at Heather Glen Golf Links, on location to discuss some course updates and fantastic specials offered this time of year. Standing behind the ninth hole on the White Course, Snead said the hole is not only his personal favorite but just about everybody’s favorite. A par 5, the hole has a water feature, and Snead said, “You can try to get it there in two, but if you double cross that fade, you’re in the water, so it’s kind of a risky shot, but it’s a beautiful hole.” The hole also features a nice backdrop of the clubhouse.
Located in Little River, S.C., Heather Glen attracts a lot of big groups. Snead said after golfing, people like to line up on mounds, sit up at the clubhouse and enjoy beverages, while overlooking the course. Coughlin told Snead that Heather Glen is special to her because it is where she met her husband.
Heather Glen Golf Links features three nines – the Red Course, White Course and the Blue Course. Additionally, the clubhouse is of a scottish design, so there is a lot of visual diversity. In December, Coughlin pointed out, the course is still looking awesome. Snead explained that Heather Glen is one of the very few courses at the beach that overseeds from tee-to-green, wall-to-wall. So, the roughs and the whole course will be nice and green all throughout the winter and into the spring. “The golf course, of course, it kind of speaks for itself,” Snead started. “The staff has always been real friendly. I think that’s one of the things that brings people back – not just the course, but the people here. We always try to greet everybody with a smile, and hopefully they leave with a smile.” Coughlin pointed out that Heather Glen is family-owned. “The Gores have been around here forever, and there are a few other owners involved,” she said. “But family-owned; you can definitely feel that when you come in. It’s not a real corporate-type feeling. What are some of the main questions you get out here?” she asked Snead.
Snead said people often ask what year the course was built – to which the answer is the course opened in 1987. He said another question is ‘What is the course record?” Snead said they are always making jokes about that. “I think we said it was 2 ½ hours and a 12 pack,” Snead joked. “I’m thinking around a 63, though. I always joke that I bogeyed the last hole – but it wasn’t me,” he said laughing.
Born in Rockingham, N.C., Snead shared that his dad was a railroad guy, and they lived in Louisville, KY and then South Georgia before moving back to the Grand Strand. “When I was a kid, my dad made me carry his [golf] bag. And he said when [I] get tired of that, he’ll give me my own set. I had a lot lighter set and I was pretty young. So, I started to do that, and fell in love with [golf]. It’s a good way to get out with your family and just enjoy each other and the game,” he said about the sport.
Heather Glen Golf Links is offering players some great packages right now. The biggest package is the Ultimate Package, which allows golfers to play all four of the Glen Group courses. These include Heather Glen Golf Links, Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links, Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club, and Possum Trot Golf Club. By paying for three courses, players can get Possum Trot for free. Additionally, golfers will get free pre-booked replays at all the golf courses, as well as range balls and lunch. So, golfers essentially get eight rounds of golf, and pay for only three.
Another great special happening exclusively this time of year is the 2-for-1 special, which is $49 plus tax and fee. Golfers receive any two of the Glens Group courses for that rate. This special is unique to December, January and February, and must be played during the month in which it was purchased.
