Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club is located on the banks of the Waccamaw River which provides a fantastic setting for this English style golf course. Clyde Johnston has created a masterpiece of a championship layout right here in Conway, SC. Just pulling up to the bag drop golfers can already see the English influence in the design of the magnificent clubhouse. Inside there is a large pro shop and a first class restaurant and bar overlooking the river.
The course itself is a fantastic challenge for golfers of all levels and has a unique design for the Grand Strand. Shaftesbury Glen has just gone through some exciting reconstruction and improvements in the last few months and we caught up to head pro Eddie Willever and asked him to bring us up to speed.
Several of the holes have been re-shaped and outlined by waste bunkers that line the hole from tee to green. The bunkers now “frame” the holes and give them a new and exciting look.
Just as important to the golfers is the fact that access to the fairways is now easier than ever. Golf carts are allowed to drive into the waste bunkers along the fairway. Shaftesbury has now made itself even more player friendly than it was before. The playability of the course as well as the pace of play on the course is better than even now.
Returning golfers will also notice some changes to the green side bunkers as well. Shaftesbury Glen is well know for its elevated greens and “finger-like” bunkers that surround the green complexes. Once again the ownership and management have made the course better. The depth has been made less severe in some of the traps. The slopes out of the traps have been lessened somewhat in some areas, adding to the playability of the bunkers. This is a major positive for the golfers that find their way into the bunkers.
The make up of Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club is still very much the same. The great English style golf course that Mr. Johnston designed is very much there. The addition of waste bunkers and subtle changes to the green side traps brings new fun and excitement to the course.
