On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand, hosts Shan Coughlin and Bryan Thomas welcome golf professional David Spoon of River Hills Golf Club into the studio for an update on the Little River course.
Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, River Hills Golf Club welcomes players with rolling fairways, unique holes and a challenging offer for all skill levels. It’s a fun course and according to Thomas – who is no stranger to River Hills – its current conditions are the best they’ve ever been!
Spoon, who has been at River Hills for seven years, said they are still trying to get their name out there. Spoon shares that some big golf names have played at River Hills in the past, prior to going professional, including Kevin Kisner, Ted Potter, Jr., Matt Every and others. They all enjoyed the course during mini-tour events and learned a lot from the experience, and Spoon wants to share that with everyone.
Spoons reminisces that in his experience as a former rules official, he has really enjoyed watching these guys grow up and be able to play at the professional level.
Spoon shares with Coughlin and Thomas that his favorite hole to play at River Hills is #7. It is the first hole visitors will see as they arrive at the course, and as a par five is a good overall example of the course that Tom Jackson designed. Thomas adds that hole #17, another par five, is also is also a tricky hole to play.
A recent change River Hills has implemented is the addition of forward tee boxes. Spoon said he wants open the course up to all levels of players and to give players an enjoyable experience. So far, has received good feedback. The course staff may even paint the new boxes fun, bright colors, and in doing so, might even support South Carolina colleges with colors like teal, garnet and more!
Coughlin adds that according to PGA Magazine, many courses are adding an extra tee box, and River Hills is just one of the courses helping to level the playing field.
Coughlin and Thomas also got Spoon’s thoughts on the Open, currently airing from the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.
Spoon shared his favor for Dustin Johnson and said that despite his conflicting conservative and aggressive playing strategies, he will win one at some point. Thomas also complemented Jordan Spieth on his success, but said he will always be a Dustin Johnson fan.
The River Hills Golf Club is located at 3670 Cedar Creek Run, off Highway 17 Business in Little River, S.C. and offers easy access from the highway. River Hills also provides venue services for receptions, reunions and other gatherings, and the course staff is friendly and easy to work with!
