This edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand takes us to Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Teeing it up at Glen Dornoch means playing the toughest finishing holes in the Grand Strand.
Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links is one of the more popular courses in the Myrtle Beach area. The Clyde Johnston design is set among a spectacular setting of live oaks that lead into the marsh and waterway views. It is a tribute to legendary golf course designer, Donald Ross. The asthetics of Glen Dornoch are remarkable and in some places simply breathtaking.
The 270 acre site is blessed with a blend of oak trees, Carolina pines, and magnolia trees. The golf course is built with the lay of the land. It has many natural elevation changes which is rare on the South Carolina coast.
Each hole was constructed with the contours of the land with respect for the natural surrounding. In fact, the golf course was built one hole at a time. This also lends to the unique design. Using the natural terrain of lakes, live oaks, marshes and river views it allows each hole to be its own experience.
At Glen Dornoch, the main attraction is the three closing holes. Often called “the toughest finishing holes in Myrtle Beach”, they are a true test of metal for golfers of all ability levels. Each hole takes golfers along the Intercoastal Waterway which provides a tough challenge coupled with spectacular views.
Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links has received numerous awards and accolations over the years. Most recently it was named to Golf Magazine’s “Top 20 Courses in South Carolina (2010).
Other awards include Golf World “Top 30 Golf Courses in South Carolina (2009,2010), Golfstyles “100 Must Play Courses of the Carolinas”, Golf Digest rated 4 1/2 stars (2005) just to name a few.
One thing for golfers to remember when playing Glen Dornoch is that position off the tee is key. It is easy to get caught up in the beauty and amazing scenery of the course and forget that it is a challenging track. Golfers will be well served to pay attention to the landing areas off each tee box. Club selection is very important to have optimal chances to score birdies!
