Mike Benson, Head Golf Professional at The Pearl joins host of Tee It Up Grand Strand, Shan Coughlin, for this edition of Play The Pearl Golf Courses – May 2015 Update. Mikes tells Shan that the Summer is here, the temperatures are heating up and the golfers are out. We had a long spring which was great and now the summer is starting off with a bang.
The Pearl has 36 holes, the East 18 and the West 18 which are two completely different courses. This is a great advantage for folks looking for something different in a two round day. Or if you like a particular type of green or layout, you can play the Pearl golf courses either way. The East 18 is prime in the summertime with Bermuda greens that love the heat, a Parkland style with tree lines fairways that provide plenty of shade and some great scenery. You only see one hole at a time and just like on the West 18, there are no homes so you can enjoy a plethora of wildlife. The West 18 has Bent grass green and for the summer, is open for play in the mornings only. While perfect in the other three seasons, the bent grass requires a bit of babying in the heat of summer. This links style layout allows the driver to come out more often than the East and the breeze from the Calabash river can be felt on every hole.
Mike likes summer golf for a couple of other reasons which he shares. The cool transition into bright green all over from the dormant brown and overseeded greens is fun to watch. On the golf course, the change of seasons is noted by the change of the “greens”. The other part he likes is that this is the time of year when he gets to play a lot of golf. He says it makes him happy. With the time change, it is easy to get in 18 holes or a good practice session after work. He is rocking the new Nike equipment – the Vapors – and is excited to hit them.
