Mike Benson of The Pearl Golf Courses in Calabash, N.C. joins host of Tee It Up Grand Strand, Shan Coughlin, with the June update for Play The Pearl Golf Courses including course conditions, and he shares a little about what’s happening at The Pearl.
Benson believes that being honest and upfront with the Pearl’s players is the best way to go, and gives a clear description about the condition of the Pearl East course greens, which is just starting to fill in with Bermuda. Benson explains that The Pearl is one of the few golf courses that tend to over-seed the greens in September so that by the middle of May, the Bermuda is ready to start growing. Benson said with the cold harsh winter and wetter spring, they are seeing some spring dead spots on the course, which only consist of small spots on the outer edges, but is still something the course staff fully intends to take care of. The maintenance staff is also keeping a lot of water on the greens to improve some stress spots, but that’s to be expected with the soaring summer temperatures.
Benson said during this time, The Pearl is offering players a bounce back coupon, which allows guests to return to the course and play for only $30. You can’t beat that!
Benson was excited to share some of the great new merchandise featured at The Pearl Golf Shop, including the Nike Covert driver, which has been a favorite among members. He said players will take the driver out for a round, and place an order for one when they return more times then not!
Finally, The Pearl is hosting the Members Club Championship, which is a month-long match play event. The competition is down to the final eight players, including one woman – Ms. Honey Martin. Benson shares with Shan that he thinks Honey Martin can win it, after playing in the Pro-Am with her a week earlier. She hits it a long way and she’s getting 18-20 strokes from everybody in the field he explained.
