BLACK BEAR 15Host of Tee It Up Grand Strand Shan Coughlin welcomes Head Golf Professional and PGA Professional Patrick Wilkenson for the Play Back Bear Golf Course April 2015 Update.  They start off the show with a shout out about Patrick’s son, Ryan, who is a senior at Newberry College and was just named honorable mention SAC just before their conference championship.  We all want to wish you good luck Ryan in your Conference event.  As a proud papa and local high school golf coach, Patrick shares that the team may not be in contention but his son and another outstanding player on the team have a good shot at doing well so we will keep you posted on how they did.

Black Bear Golf Club picBlack Bear Golf Club was built in 1989, and is located just a bit up Highway 9 from the Myrtle Beach area, 12 miles from the waterway bridge, which makes it perfect for that drive in/out round or when you just want to get a little bit away from the beach.  The course is in great shape and there are no homes around it which makes for a great outing.  There are also about 23 finger lakes that only come into play on a few holes but provides the natural scenery and wildlife that we are spoiled with here in the Carolinas.  The property was an old tobacco farm so the ponds were there from back in the farming days and the architect just worked them into the design.

This is spring golf season and Patrick shares that the biggest topic of conversation for those folks coming off the course is the speed of the greens..  Black Bear doesn’t over seed the greens so they roll true all year since they do not have to go through the transitions.  Let’s face it, as long as they are true, they can be brown/dormant, and it doesn’t matter.  Green is pretty, but rolling true is more important and right now, these greens are fast.
