Mike Benson, PGA Professional and Head Golf Professional, joins host Shan Coughlin to talk about The Pearl Golf Club on this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand. Not only do they talk a little golf, but they also discuss length of roots, the great speed with which Mike can spit out a conversation and the always controversial issue – the weather. The Pearl, located just over the North Carolina border in Calabash, boasts two 18 hole championship courses with completely different layouts and grasses. The West was opened in 1987 and is a links style course featuring bent grass greens. It was given a prestigious 4 ½ star rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” in 2004. The last four holes overlook the coastal marshland and Calabash River. The East is a traditional parkland style course which was completely renovated in 1999 with Mini Verde Bermuda greens. This course was given a 4 star rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” in 2008. To top it off, there is not a home or condo on the property and no out of bounds which is truly unique in this area.
Listen as Mike tells Shan about growing up in New York, playing in all weather conditions on all types of courses as they lament about the slightly cold weather South Carolina has been having. Note to readers, it was 70 degrees last week but is a bit chillier this week. Non-the-less, the northern golfers can be spotted in their shorts as they brave the frigid cold – ha ha ha – of the Carolinas.
