As we are preparing to attend the 2014 PGA merchandise show in Orlando Florida, I went to the PGA website to see what updates there may be and much to my surprise and pleasure, they have a picture of Major Dan Rooney with the headline that he is to receive the 2014 Donald Ross Award given by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). A couple of days ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Major Ed Pulido, associate of Major Rooneys at the Folds of Honor Foundation, and we talked about Major Rooney. You see, after serving our country in the Air Force and then in the Oklahoma Air National Guard serving three combat tours in Iraq and receiving received many decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Anti-Terrorism Medal, Combat Readiness Medal and Air Expeditionary Medal, Major Rooney then came home to start the Folds of Honor Foundation providing support and help to those families of disabled and fallen heroes.
According to the post, “A Class A PGA Professional golfer, Rooney devotes himself to assisting the families of those killed or disabled in service to the U.S. in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. Funds raised during Patriot Golf Day support the scholarships awarded to military families through the Folds of Honor Foundation. Since 2007, the Folds of Honor has raised more than $38 million and awarded nearly 5,500 scholarships.”
Major Rooney is also majority owner of the Patriot Golf Club in Tulsa Oklahoma whose motto “Great Golf for the Greater Good,” is affirmed daily at 1300 hours. In honor of the 13 folds that bring the American Flag to its triangle shape, bells toll 13 times. The Patriot is also the host site for The Patriot Cup held annually on Memorial Day and televised on the Golf Channel.
This game, which is such a passion for so many of us, and which becomes an addiction of sorts for those “bitten” gives in so many ways. Please say yes to those local charity golf tournament, the events like Patriot Golf Day in your area and let those sponsors of great heroes like Major Rooney in their endeavors, know it matters by supporting them. This very proper, rule laden, tradition rich industry gives so much back to communities through the PGA tournament charity funds, all those local courses who cut the charities a break for hosting a tournament with them and all of the foundations started by professionals and amateur golfers alike. I am constantly amazed.
Congratulations to you Major Dan Rooney who is to Receive the 2014 Donald Ross Award. It is much deserved and Sir, thank you for all you have done for our country and through the game of golf. (Photo Credit – www.pga.com)
