Arcadian Shores February 2016 Update
General Manager Frank Coughlin gives the Arcadian Shores February 2016 Update from sunny Myrtle Beach South Carolina on this edition of Tee It UP Grand Strand. Host Shan Coughlin joins Frank just behind the 9th green to talk about one of the oldest courses on the Grand Strand. Arcadian Shores Golf Club is a golf staple in the Myrtle Beach area and they have a lot going on in 2016. Centrally located by Restaurant Row, Arcadian Shores is easy to find, located between the main road that stretches the entire Grand Strand, Highway 17, and the Atlantic Ocean.
First, these two talk about the hole they are standing on. The Number 9, par 4, is a good finishing hole if you started on 10 according to Frank. It is not too difficult and is gradually uphill so most golfers will need to take an additional club if they are not used to playing here. The green is deep and undulating as most of them are out here at Arcadian Shores, so distance and accuracy also come into play if you hope to one or two putt.
Arcadian Shores, in addition to large undulating greens, also boasts many water features that come into play including a green fronting pond and fountain on the 4th hole. These water features bring not only beauty to the course but are home to many forms of wildlife including birds and gators. The water, the wildlife and the impressive large oaks are what make Arcadian Shores a unique experience, but one that can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities.
Arcadian Shores is located very close to the ocean so Shan asks Frank to give a tip or at least discuss some of the differences visitors can expect to experience when they come to play in this area. Frank mentions that visitors from the Northeast and colder regions are used to the majority of their courses having bent grass on the greens and even tee to green. When they get here, they have to transition to hitting out of Bermuda fairways and in most cases, Bermuda greens. Frank says Bermuda grass grows horizontally so in the rough or fairways, the ball can settle in and the club doesn’t go through the grass quite as easy as it does bent grass. On the greens, golfers need to look to see if the grass appears dull or shiny to know if they are putting into the grain or with the grain because that will impact how hard to hit the putt. Lastly, the air is heavier at sea level so for those used to hitting at a higher altitude, the ego has to be checked or they will come up short all day. Shan adds that in combination with less sleep and possibly a few more beverages, it is always a good idea to club up.
