Shan Coughlin joins Bob Seganti on location at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island to discuss winter golf and some great golf specials, and to also reveal few things that make the course so player-friendly. Coughlin and Seganti begin the interview with a word about the day – Veterans Day. With flags up around the course, Seganti expressed his respects and talked with Coughlin about the Folds of Honor program. The Folds of Honor Foundation provides educational scholarships to the families of killed or disabled American military (www.foldsofhonor.org) – an initiative started by Major Dan Rooney. True Blue Golf is associated with the foundation and also participates in Patriots Golf Day. Seganti even wore a Folds of Honor shirt during the interview. He told Coughlin that they like to support veterans whenever they can. He said they would like to thank those who have served and those who are currently serving.
With warm temperatures, low humidity and perfect golfing conditions, Coughlin and Seganti move the conversation along to the course. True Blue Golf Plantation opened in 1998 and was designed by Mike Strantz. Strantz also designed True Blue’s sister course Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, which sits just across U.S. Highway 17. Some changes were made to the course in 2000, which made it a bit more user-friendly. Today, True Blue is a golf course for players of all levels, featuring multiple sets of tees, extremely wide fairways and wide greens. Seganti said the course is appropriate for beginner golfers up to college Division 1 level players and even tour players.
“So, it’s really a course for everybody,” Seganti said. “There is some visual deception there but you know, it’s an interesting golf course with wide landing areas and a lot of room off the tee. And there’s really only five water features on the golf course…So there’s a lot of room to move the ball around you.” Coughlin added that True Blue is a “thinking person’s course.” It is designed so that golfers have to really take a close look, figure out which way they want to move the ball, and also have a great time doing it. Coughlin said the course is also very lady-friendly. Seganti said True Blue is easily one of the top five widest golf courses a golfer will play. So if a player does make that rare error, there’s a little bit of room, and they have a good chance of getting away with it.
“And there’s a variety of ways to play each hole,” he explained. “If you’re a left-to-right, if you’re a right-to-lefter, low, high, this way and that – a lot of golf courses don’t give you that option, where you have to be Point A to Point B to Point C. Here you can plot your points…and like you said, it’s a golf course for everybody.” With sister course Caledonia just across the street, golfers have the opportunity to play 36 great holes without traveling far. True Blue is partnered with The Golf Director and provides some great packages for staying and playing. True Blue and Caledonia feature 500 condos and golf villa units on property, so accommodation options are good.
True Blue also features the Steve Dresser Golf Academy on site. The academy was nationally ranked as a Top 25 golf school by Golf Magazine, and offers visitors the chance to plan a golf school/golf vacation type trip. The course also offers 3-, 4-, and 5-night packages with multiple rounds. True Blue provides a great opportunity to play two of America’s great golf courses at a good value price. For those tuning in from up north, winter time on the Grand Strand provides great opportunities to drive down or book a flight into Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, and Charleston. Seganti said he thinks there are about 25 direct flights to this area, and the marketplace as a whole offers great golf value in the winter time, as well as great weather.
