Farmstead Golf Links February 2016 Update
This edition of Tee It UP Grand Strand features the Farmstead Golf Links February 2016 Update with General Manager, Jason Monahan. Host of the show, Shan Coughlin, joins him in front of the clubhouse, an iconic visual at Farmstead Golf Links. This two story columned plantation style clubhouse is home to traditional southern hospitality and even incorporates the symbol of the rooster for emphasis.
Located in Calabash North Carolina just minutes from the South Carolina State Line, Farmstead Golf Links is about 20 minutes inland from the beach communities. Jason and Shan, with the February sunshine in their faces, talk about how the members truly enjoy this golf home and how visitors are enveloped into that feeling since this is a resort type daily fee course.
Dual course snow-bird memberships are available from November to March for Farmstead Golf Links and Meadowlands Golf Club, the sister course just two minutes down the road. These are monthly pay memberships and after the flat rate is paid for the month, members play unlimited golf. Jason said they can play twice a day, every day if they want. Annual memberships are available for as low as $355 and members pay a small fee to play each time they come out. There are different levels to fit what each member is looking for. These memberships allow golfers to enjoy a private country club experience in the midst of a resort golf town because of the location and the level of service offered to everyone.
One thing Farmstead Golf Links is known for is their greens. As Jason shares, they are consistent, they putt true and they are speedy. This year for the first time in a few years, the greens were overseeded. Jason says that once you are known for something, it adds a little weight in that expectations have to continue to be met. Matt Smith, Superintendent at Farmstead Golf Links, continues to impress. Shan adds that after talking with him a few times it becomes crystal clear that superintendents are not just greens keepers, they are scientists, mostly chemists. Their job is compounded by mother nature who can be their best friend or worst enemy.
The other feature Farmstead Golf Links is known for is the Par 6 700 plus yard finishing hole. Number 18 is one of the only par 6 holes in the country and the only one to span two states. That’s right, you actually tee off in South Carolina. At Farmstead Golf Links, 22% of the course overall is in South Carolina. Golfers have four opportunities to cross state lines off the tee and one of those is on number 18. Since you can’t see the green from the tee box, Jason says you must aim at the clubhouse which is visible in the distance. He also adds that you can’t try to take off too much on the drive. You get 6 shots to make par and once you have played the hole a few times, you will realize it is probably one of the easiest holes on the course.
