Farmstead Golf Links is in the midst of its summer transition.  General Manager, Jason Monahan will tell us how the courses combat that heat of the summer sun in the south.  The superintendent has his staff working the course to keep up with the grass transition smooth and seamless for the golfers.

In the wintertime the golf course is covered with “winter rye”grass that thrives in the cooler weather.  This is necessary due to the fact that the natural Bermuda grass is a warm weather strain that will die out or go dormant in the cool winter months leaving the course looking drab and unfriendly.

Once the spring comes the course needs to reverse the process and get the warm weather Bermuda back on the course.  Once the Bermuda grass grows in and gets thick and full the course will be very healthy and green even in the very hot months of the summer here in the Carolinas where the temperatures can top out over 100 degrees.

In addition to the seasonal transition, Farmstead Golf Links is in the midst of a new project out by the 10th tee box.  Currently the course boasts a very nice practice putting green just outside the clubhouse next to the bag drop.  The down side is that the practice green is quite a bit away from the 10th tee.

Farmstead does use the double-tee format of getting golfers onto the course.  So now, in an effort to be more player friendly and provide a better practice experience to golfers, a second putting green is being built next to the 10th tee.  This allows golfers that start their round on the 1oth hole the ability to practice putting right up to the moments before they hit the course.  It is truly a more enhanced experience before even stepping on the course.

The new putting green will be open for use once the fall golf season rolls around this October.  One more reason to head to Calabash, NC to play Farmstead Golf Links.  It is a short 15 minute drive north from Myrtle Beach.
